How to Print Wedding Invitations at Home From a Template

Printing wedding invitations at home starts with choosing a file your printer and editing software can handle. A digital download may be an editable PDF, an online template, or a finished image. Check which one you are buying before choosing cardstock.

The most useful first step is to print one complete invitation. That proof will show whether the wording, size, color, and paper work together before you spend time producing the whole guest list.

Check how the template is edited

Marifête’s Elaine dusty blue wedding invitation is a PDF template intended for Adobe Reader on a desktop computer. You can edit the highlighted text and adjust its font styling, while the text boxes and artwork remain fixed.

The Tara greenery invitation suite also uses editable PDFs. Other Marifête products use Templett or Canva, so the instructions for one listing should not be assumed to apply to every design. Open the included guide and keep a copy of the original files.

Confirm the finished size and page layout

Both invitation examples above include a 5 × 7 inch invitation arranged two per US Letter page. The page you send to the printer is therefore larger than the individual card you cut out.

Distinguish between a single-card file and a print sheet containing several cards. If your file is already arranged two per page, do not add another multiple-pages-per-sheet setting in the print dialog. That can shrink the invitations unexpectedly.

The Elaine listing specifies an A7 envelope measuring 5.25 × 7.25 inches. Test the finished card inside your chosen envelope, especially if you plan to add extra inserts.

Choose paper your printer supports

White cardstock lets the design’s colors show clearly. Cream or kraft paper changes the appearance of the artwork because unprinted areas take on the paper’s color.

Check your printer manual for supported paper weight, thickness, and feed method. Heavy cardstock is not suitable for every home printer. Buy a few sheets first, and choose a local print shop if your printer cannot feed the stock you want reliably.

Ask for an uncoated or matte sample if you prefer a softer look. A textured surface can be attractive, but very fine lettering should be tested on it before you commit.

Print without changing the card dimensions

For an already sized print sheet, use actual size or a 100% scale setting rather than automatically fitting the page. Adobe explains that the Fit option can enlarge small pages or reduce large ones to match the selected paper. See its guide to PDF page scaling if the controls in your version look different.

Select the paper size that matches the file. If your printer’s unprintable margins clip the design at 100%, do not solve the problem by shrinking the card without checking the result. Use a supported layout or ask a printer to produce the file at its intended size.

Use crop marks and bleed only when the supplied file and your printing method call for them. A print shop may want a single-card file with bleed, while a home print sheet may already include everything needed for trimming.

Proof the invitation in a fixed order

  1. Read names, dates, times, and addresses against your confirmed wedding details.
  2. Check the RSVP contact or website address character by character.
  3. Print a draft and measure the card after trimming.
  4. Print on the actual cardstock and review colors in daylight.
  5. Check the smallest text and test the card in its envelope.

Save the approved file with a clear name, then print in manageable batches. Let the ink dry before stacking or cutting if your paper and printer require it. Trim using the supplied marks and check alignment periodically.

Know when professional printing is the easier option

A local printer is worth considering for large quantities, thick stock, double-sided alignment, or a tight deadline. Tell the printer the finished dimensions and ask to approve a proof. An editable template gives you control of the wording; it does not require you to do the printing yourself.

Start with the Elaine invitation for a single dusty blue design or the Tara suite for coordinated cards. Finish the wording with our wedding invitation wording guide before making your proof.
